<\/p>\nAlbania is a very special destination for Besthomez. We visited and looked around its capital, Tirana, in the mountains, at wineries, with shepherds and in their villages, as well as in the booming tourist destinations on the country's idyllic beaches.<\/p>\n
This country with ancient roots is on the verge of writing a new chapter in its history: possible membership of the European Union. Its capital, Tirana, which is developing at a rapid pace, stands as a symbol of the progress and change that the entire country is currently undergoing. Tirana, a city in transition, is often described as a mega construction site, reflecting Albania's dynamism on the path to modernity.<\/p>\n
You should pay attention when a topic keeps coming up. More and more people are talking about Albania, but still, very few have been there. We set off with Besthomez and are reporting back! We'll pass on what we've learned, seen, and understood \u2013 but above all: our fondness!<\/p>\n

In 2014, Albania was officially recognised as an EU candidate country. This was a significant milestone that has implications for both Albania's past and its future. Formal accession negotiations began in 2022, and since then, a new Europe has opened up for Albania, uniting the old Balkan connections with the modern structures of the European Union. However, joining the EU is a long and challenging process that requires much patience and a willingness to reform.<\/p>\n

Albania's path to the EU is not a simple one. It is necessary for the country to modernise its old societal structure. This requires adaptation to European values and laws. Similar to Albania's rugged geography, crisscrossed by mountains and valleys, this path is also marked by challenges and unexpected twists. The transformation the country is undergoing is profound and demands structural reforms in the areas of the rule of law, justice, and the fight against corruption.<\/p>\n

It remains uncertain how long the process of joining the EU will take. It is possible that it will take many more years before Albania finally joins the European Union. But one thing is certain: when Albania crosses the threshold to the EU, it will not just be another member. Rather, it will be a living testament to the unstoppable force of history and the indestructible diversity of the Balkan region, which enriches Europe in many ways.<\/p>\n

Albanians are aware of this and are investing with all their might in the future. Not only is the capital shining with renewed splendour, but above all, incredibly tasteful holiday quarters are being created right by the sea \u2013 so completely different from the block developments on many beaches in southern Spain \u2013 that we had to rub our eyes in disbelief!
