Forget Toblerone and Mövenpick. In summer, the ice cream rocket beats all other sweet temptations in Switzerland. With 8 million units sold each year, it is the most popular ice cream flavor in Switzerland.
It is rather unremarkable in terms of size and taste: a simple water ice with a fruity and a neutral part and a thin chocolate coating on top. Compared to a Starbucks Caramel Frappuccino, for example, the Rocket has a ridiculously low calorie value. But in 1969, when the first moon landing took place and the Glacé rocket was launched on the market, most food portions were still much smaller – and the rocket has never been changed, neither in shape nor in recipe, for 55 years now.
However, the rocket now enjoys cult status not only as an ice cream, but also as a design object. It is simply impossible to imagine the Swiss summer without it and every Swiss, young and old, associates it with great childhood memories.
