Albania is a very special destination for Besthomez. We were there and took a look around its capital Tirana, the mountains, wineries, shepherds and their villages, as well as the booming tourist destinations on the country’s idyllic beaches.
This country with ancient roots is about to write a new chapter in its history: possible membership of the European Union. Its capital Tirana, which is developing at a rapid pace, is a symbol of the progress and change that the entire country is currently undergoing. Tirana, a city in transition, is often described as a mega construction site, reflecting the dynamism of Albania on its way to modernity.
You should listen when a topic comes up again and again. More and more people are talking about Albania, but still only a few have been there. We set off for Besthomez and report back!
We pass on what we have learned, seen and understood – but above all: our sympathy!
Historical roots: a legacy of Thracians, Illyrians and Romans
Albania is located in a region that has been known for thousands of years as a melting pot of cultures and peoples. Its cultural heritage ranges from the Thracian tribes and the Illyrians to the Romans and medieval principalities. This rich and complex history is reflected in the traditions, languages and customs that still characterize the country today. Albania is thus a country deeply rooted in its past, but at the same time ready to face the challenges of modernity.
EU accession: a long-awaited step
In 2014, Albania was officially recognized as an EU candidate country. This was a significant milestone, affecting both Albania’s past and its future. Formal accession negotiations began in 2022, and since then a new Europe has opened up for Albania, uniting the old ties of the Balkans with the modern structures of the European Union. However, joining the EU is a long and demanding process that requires a lot of patience and willingness to reform.
Challenges on the road to the European Union
Albania’s path to the EU is not an easy one. It is necessary for the country to modernize its old social structure, which was shaped by various powerful empires such as the Byzantines and Ottomans.
This requires an adaptation to European values and laws. Much like Albania’s rugged geography, criss-crossed by mountains and valleys, this path is characterized by challenges and unexpected twists and turns. The transformation the country is undergoing is profound and requires structural reforms in the areas of rule of law, justice and the fight against corruption.
Kanun of Lekë Dukagjini: A medieval heritage
In addition to the state legal system, traditional customary law still plays an important role in Albania today, especially in rural areas. This law is known as Kanun, and the best known of these is the Kanun of Lekë Dukagjini. It is a medieval code that was written down in the 15th century, but is based on much older traditions. The Kanun regulates social life, especially in the northern regions of Albania, and includes, among other things, the right of hospitality. This code shows that Albanian culture is deeply rooted and that old traditions still play a central role today.
Reforms and tradition: a difficult balancing act
The reforms required by Albania must have a deep impact on the country’s social and cultural structure, which makes modernization particularly challenging. Albanian society, in which customary laws such as the Kanun still apply to this day, faces the challenge of reconciling these traditional norms with modern European laws. For example, while the handshake in the Kanun is considered irrevocable and does not require a lawyer, this is often difficult to implement in Europe.
But it is precisely this tension between tradition and modernity that gives Albania its unique character.
The Western Balkans: A region of strategic importance for the EU
The European Union has now recognized the strategic importance of the Western Balkans.
This region, which includes Albania, embodies the cultural diversity of Europe like no other.
The different peoples who live in Albania bring a dynamic energy to the political process that goes far beyond mere negotiations. They make it clear that Albania is ready to integrate into the European community without losing its cultural identity.
The future of Albania: an uncertain but promising path
How long the process of EU accession will take remains uncertain. It is possible that it will take many more years before Albania finally joins the European Union. But one thing is certain: when Albania crosses the threshold into the EU, it will not be just another member. Rather, it will be living proof of the unstoppable force of history and the indestructible diversity of the Balkan region, which enriches Europe in many ways.
The Albanians are aware of this and are investing in the future with all their might. Not only is the capital shining in new splendor, legislation is also being adapted to European standards – but above all, incredibly tasteful vacation accommodation is being built right by the sea – so completely different from the ugly block development of many beaches in southern Spain – that we rubbed our eyes!
The surprises and their prices have names: “Turquoise Marina”, “Porto Lazli”, “Green Coast” – more about that next time!
