Summer vacation with a dog on the North Sea island of Rømø

A summer vacation with a dog on the Danish island of Rømø can be a wonderful experience. The Danish island has one of the largest sandy beaches in Europe. The animals, it seems, enjoy the North Sea feeling just as much as their owners. And they are assigned special tasks.

Rømø is the southernmost Danish island in the North Sea. It is connected to the mainland by road via a 9.2 kilometer long causeway – ideal if you are traveling with your own dog. In terms of area, Rømø is around a third larger than the neighboring German island of Sylt, which can be reached by ferry from Rømø.

What makes Rømø different from Sylt

Yet Rømø is roughly the opposite of Sylt. There are only a few hotel rooms, no luxury hotels at all, comparatively little gastronomy, no high-end restaurants, but sandwiches, soft ice cream, smoked fish snacks. And great cream cakes in the “Antik Café”.

Seeing and being seen plays absolutely no role here. If you’re looking for designer labels, you’re on the wrong island. Rømø is peace, distance, space, beach life, mudflats, heathland, even forest, dunes, salt marshes, a few cows and sheep, a few horses, gnarled spruce trees, cycle paths. Less than 600 inhabitants live here all year round, and those who come as guests stay at a campsite or rent a vacation home in the majority of cases.

Here are some tips and information to help you plan your stay with your dog:
